San Antonio – The first tournament of the season granted one Rattler the best showing of her career.

Plugging in the first 18 holes of her final year as a Rattler, senior Julia Dickens (Fredericksburg, Texas) led the Rattlers with a team- and- career-best third-place finish in the University of the Incarnate Word Ladies Golf Invitational. Hauling clubs for the past three years, Dickens put them to their best use finishing with a total score 158 over the two-day tournament.

Dickens finished the first round at a career-low 77, following under only two players, Flower Castillo and Jessica Cornish, both of Incarnate Word, who would finish first and second place for the tournament. The second round of the tournament swung in an 81 for Dickens, finishing two strokes shy of the second-place finisher, Cornish, and seven strokes short of first-place finisher Castillo, who won the tournament with a total score of 149.

Under Dickens, the Rattlers took an overall third-place finish behind Texas A&M-Kingsville and Incarnate Word, which won the tournament.

In addition to churning out a best in Dickens, the season opener displayed commendable performances from all five Rattlers competing.

Camille Furgeson (Sr., Newcastle, Calif.) finished second for the team, shooting a total of 166 after rounds of 84 and 82. Rounding out the top-three Rattler finishers, all of whom are seniors, was Adela Elizonda (Monterrey, Mexico), who came in three strokes behind Furgeson with a total score of 169.

Freshman Heather Wedige (San Antonio) completed the first rounds of her collegiate career at 176, followed by Daryn Petermann (So., Comfort, Texas), who finished with a total score of 177.

Dickens and the rest of the Rattlers will get less than a week’s rest before another tournament begins, as they compete in the Angelo State Invitational Monday in San Angelo, Texas.
