San Antonio – M.P. Cokinos is new to St. Mary’s baseball program. Rene Solis is new to the starting pitching rotation.

But last week, no one was better in the Heartland Conference than these two.

Cokinos, a junior catcher from Houston, has been named the league’s Hitter of the Week, while Solis (So., San Antonio) is the conference’s Pitcher of the Week, the Heartland announced Monday.

Cokinos had a dynamic opening week for the Rattlers, who entered Monday’s game against Angelo State with a 3-0 record, having homered in each of his first two swings of the bat as a Rattler. He finished the week with a .500 batting average over eight at-bats with two home runs, five RBIs and a 1.25 slugging percentage to go along with a pair of walks. He also had a perfect fielding percentage behind the plate.

Meanwhile, Solis showed he could be one of the guys to help the Rattlers move on after graduating three First-Team All-Conference pitchers last season by pitching seven scoreless innings in a 9-0 shutout of Newman last week. He allowed just two hits and struck out three batters in the game, helping the Rattlers open the 2012 season with a 3-0 record in Heartland Conference play.

The Rattlers are nationally ranked, placing as high as No. 4 in the country according to the College Baseball Lineup poll.
