San Antonio – The St. Mary’s baseball team will open the season ranked second in the South Central Region, according a poll recently released by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

And they’ll do so on one of the biggest baseball stages in town, playing the majority of their home schedule this season at the San Antonio Missions’ Wolff Stadium while awaiting the construction of their own brand-new facility.

The regional poll, released this week, features the Rattlers tied with Emporia State for the second spot behind No. 1 Central Missouri. St. Mary’s received one of seven first-place votes after finishing last season ranked atop the regional standings.

The Rattlers also placed two players – first baseman Tyler Migl (Sr., San Antonio) and newcomer M.P. Cokinos (Jr., Houston), a catcher – on the NCBWA Preseason Team. Both players made the Second Team.

Migl, the reigning Heartland Conference Player of the Year, batted .381 last season while recording 47 RBIs and 50 runs scored. Cokinos, a transfer from the University of Houston, made the Conference USA All-Freshman Team two years ago, and hit .267 with 37 RBIs and 18 runs scored as a sophomore last season.

St. Mary’s opens its season Saturday in a doubleheader against Heartland Conference foe Newman University. The games get underway at 12 p.m. at Wolff Stadium.
