WICHITA FALLS, Texas – St. Mary’s senior men’s golfer Matt Vela finished in a tie for fourth place at the Midwestern State Invitational, fueling the Rattlers to a seventh-place finish as a team.
Vela, a San Antonio native, carded a 76 on Tuesday for a three-round score of 221, finishing seven stokes off the lead.
Jeff Rein (Sr., San Antonio) finished in a tie for 17th place after shooting 75 in the final round. He finished at 227.
Sam Jernigan (Jr., San Antonio) and Shawn Bennett (Fr., Marion, Texas) both cracked 80 Tuesday, shooting 79 and 76, respectively.
Chris Becker (Jr., San Antonio) shot 81 on Tuesday to finish at 239, while Jernigan shot 235 for the tournament. Bennett finished at 247.
Oklahoma Christian shot 892 as a team to win the event, while Newman’s Ed Herzog shot 214 to take the individual title.
