ODESSA, Texas – With runs hard to come by Friday night, the early dent Texas-Permian Basin put on the scoreboard loomed pretty large over St. Mary’s.

Unable to erase the two-run deficit, the Lady Rattlers fell 3-1, dropping their first Heartland Conference contest of the year at Texas-Permian Basin.

The Falcons struck with two runs in the bottom of the third inning, and while the Lady Rattlers countered with a run in the fifth, UTPB tacked on another in the bottom of the frame to secure the victory.

St. Mary’s ace Emily Brittain (Fr., Corpus Christi, Texas) scattered five hits in four innings to drop to 13-6, while Crystal Keller (So., Castroville, Texas) came in in relief to pitch two scoreless innings.

UTPB starter Desiree Valero gave up just three hits in seven innings.

Shelly Lee (So., San Antonio) drove in the Lady Rattlers’ lone run, singling to left field with two away in the fifth to bring in Lauren Miller (Sr., Baytown, Texas).

The two teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. Saturday.
