San Antonio – Aaron Stares tacked on a late goal for the St. Mary’s men’s soccer team, but it wasn’t enough as Incarnate Word prevailed 3-1 behind three first-half goals Wednesday night.

Ivan Yanez struck twice, scoring in the 22nd and 39th minutes, while James Nero tacked on a third goal at the 42:27 mark to allow the 10th-ranked Cardinals to prevail at home.

St. Mary’s was outshot 11-1 in the first half, but most noticeably saw an 8-0 discrepancy in the number of fouls called before halftime. The Rattlers got off five shots in the second half, including Stares’ (Jr., Swindon, England) 67th-minute goal.

Goalkeeper Patrick Kasperitis (RS-So., Corpus Christi, Texas) saved six shots in the game.

St. Mary’s (3-12 overall) will wrap up its season against Newman at 1 p.m. Sunday, when the Rattlers will have a chance to equal last year’s win total with a victory.
