San Antonio – The 10-time Heartland Conference Champions that are the St. Mary’s softball team have been honored for their hard work off the field by being named an All-Academic Team by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

The Rattlers had a cumulative grade-point average of 3.06 for the 2011 season, and can add another honor to their already extensive list recognizing their work in the classroom.

The St. Mary’s softball team also housed five standout Rattler scholars, with recent graduate Kelly Baker (Arlington, Texas), Heather Haas (Jr., Shiner, Texas), Crystal Keller (Jr., LaCoste, Texas), Shelly Lee (Jr., San Antonio) and Stacey Moss (Sr., San Antonio) all being named Division II All-America Scholar Athletes by the NFCA.

Graduated in May, Baker left her mark on the field when she retired as a Rattler last season. She was named the Heartland Conference Woman of the Year her senior year and was a four-time member of the Heartland Conference Presidents’ Honor Roll. Baker was also thrice selected for the CoSIDA/ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District team.

Haas, Keller, Lee and Moss all joined Baker in holding multiple academic honors. All five were named to the Heartland Conference Presidents’ Honor Roll last year, to go along with their Heartland Conference Championship on the field.

With its honor of being named an All-Academic Team and having five Rattlers chosen as Division II All-America Scholar Athletes, the St. Mary’s softball team continues to show it is not only a champion in the field and at bat, but also contenders as scholars.
