The Greehey Scholars at St. Mary’s strive to become the leaders of tomorrow. Part of this process includes using their savvy business skills to help others.

This year, Greehey Scholars made their first service immersion trip. Stephanie Ward, Ph.D., Greehey Scholars adviser, chose to travel to Sarteneja, Belize because of the impact the students could have on the local economy.

The Scholars worked with Sarteneja Shipstern Nature Reserve, fishing guides and other local industries to create strategic plans, budgets and marketing plans, providing one-on-one business coaching. They conducted nine workshops, as well.

While in Sarteneja, students and faculty stayed with local people in the town gracious enough to open their homes to St. Mary’s. During their stay, the students met with local businesses, and visited the Shipstern Nature Reserve and Mayan ruins.

“This trip allowed our group a chance to grow together, to learn about ourselves and each other,” said Greehey Scholar Sean O’Kelley.
