San Antonio – They shared 20th place at the UCO Invitational earlier this week, and now they’ll be sharing an award.
St. Mary’s men’s golfers Jeff Rein (Sr., San Antonio) and Matt Vela (Sr., San Antonio) were named the Heartland Conference Co-Men’s Golfers of the Week, the league announced Wednesday.
Rein and Vela each shot 224, helping lead the Rattlers to a tie for seventh place. Rein, who ranks second in the conference in stroke average, opened with a first-round 76 before firing 73 and 75 over the following two rounds.
Vela, playing injured, overcame a first-round 83 by carding scorching-hot totals in the second and third rounds. He shot 71 in the second and 70 in the third.
The award marks the fifth time Vela has been named the conference’s player of the week and the fourth for Rein, who also won the honor last week. St. Mary’s has accounted for nine of the 13 weekly awards handed out over the fall and spring seasons.
