San Antonio – Sam Jernigan led the way for the St. Mary’s men’s golf team at their annual tournament, posting a two-round score of 148 Monday to enter Tuesday’s final round of action tied for 13th place.

Jernigan (Sr., San Antonio) followed an even-par 72 in the first round with a 76 in the second round, helping the Rattlers post a team score of 607, which was good enough for a piece of sixth place at the Bruce Williams Memorial Tournament/St. Mary’s Invitational.

Red-hot Abilene Christian, the country’s No. 8-ranked team, led the event with a score of 577. The Wildcats were paced by standout Alex Carpenter, whose score of 136 gives him a four-shot lead over Northeastern State’s Casey Nelson.

The third and final round will get underway early Tuesday morning.

Senior Chris Becker, a San Antonio native, did well to start the tournament, scoring 152 to tie for 21st place. Shawn Bennett (So., Marion, Texas) matched Becker stroke for stroke after opening up the tournament with a 73 in the first round.

Freshman Marko Lloyd of New Braunfels, Texas shot 155.
