San Antonio – The St. Mary’s volleyball team is off to its best start since 1996, so it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that the Heartland Conference awards have come pouring in.

Victorria Martinez (Fr., Arlington, Texas) has been named the Heartland Conference Libero of the Week Allie Murray (Jr., San Antonio) is the conference’s Setter of the Week, the league has announced.

Both players were instrumental in helping St. Mary’s roar out of the gate to a 5-0 mark, their best start since winning nine in a row to start the 1996 campaign. St. Mary’s tied with Regis University as having the best showing in last week’s St. Mary’s Volleyball Tournament, where both teams finished 4-0.

Martinez compiled the second-most digs of all Liberos in the tournament, averaging 4.5 per set. She had 20-or-more digs in three of the Rattlers’ five matches.

Meanwhile, Murray – replacing last year’s Heartland Conference Player of the Year, Kori McCarver – had a huge weekend, being named to the All-Tournament Team. She averaged 9.64 assists and 2.64 digs per set in the event, in addition to totaling nine service aces during the week.

She especially shined in a season-opening victory over Texas Wesleyan, dishing out 48 assists and recording 23 digs.

St. Mary’s will take its spotless record to Springfield, Mass., this weekend, where it will compete in the American International Tournament. The Rattlers’ first match will be against Holy Family at 4 p.m. Friday.
