San Antonio – St. Mary’s women’s golfer Bailey Furgeson is just four shots off the pace, firing a first-round score of 82 in the opening round of the 2011 Fall Cardinal Classic on Monday.

Furgeson, a freshman from Newcastle, Calif., is tied for fourth place, helping put the Lady Rattlers in second place behind host Incarnate Word entering Tuesday’s final round.

Senior Alejandra Cantu of Mission, Texas is just a shot back of Furgeson after carding an 11-over-par 83. After scoring 45 on the front nine, Cantu recorded a 38 on the back nine – which tied for the second-best partial score of the day.

UIW’s Flower Castillo is in first place after shooting 78, while St. Mary’s (335 points) trails the Cardinals by 15.

Cami Furgeson, a junior from Newcastle, Calif., and Julia Dickens (Jr., Fredericksburg, Texas) are tied for eighth at 85. Adela Elizonda Rodriguez (Monterrey, Mexico) shot 95.

The tournament marks the Lady Rattlers’ final event during the fall portion of their schedule.
