ABILENE, Texas – St. Mary’s senior Sam Jernigan has his first top-10 finish of the year, and it took all of one tournament to get there.

Jernigan, a San Antonio native from Reagan High School, finished tied for 10th after carding a two-round score of 142 at Abilene Christian’s Charles Coody West Texas Intercollegiate Tournament, the Rattlers’ first event of the season.

Jernigan fired a 72 Tuesday following Monday’s 70, helping the Rattlers finish 12th as a team. ACU’s Alex Carpenter won the event after shooting 134, while Central Oklahoma overcame a first-round deficit to win the even as a team.

Jernigan was an All-Heartland Conference selection last year, when he maintained a 76.00 stroke average.

Freshman Marko Lloyd, a New Braunfels, Texas native, matched Jernigan’s second-round 72 to finish tied for 48th place. He shot 151 overall.

Brothers Chris Becker (Sr., San Antonio) and Kyle Becker (Fr., San Antonio) finished tied for 64th place with matching 156 scores.

Shawn Bennett (So., Marion, Texas) shot 165.
