San Antonio – A great week of practice didn’t translate as well as the Lady Rattlers’ women’s golf team would have liked in Monday’s opening round of the St. Mary’s Lady Rattler Round-Up.

Led by Alejandra Cantu’s first-day score of 84, St. Mary’s enters Tuesday’s final round in 13th place at the Pecan Valley Golf Club.

St. Edward’s Wallis Spears leads the field with a 1-under-par 72, pacing the Hilltoppers’ first-place standing with a score of 297. Tarleton State and Dallas Baptist are tied for second at 306.

“The weather we had over the last month, we were very fortunate because we had good enough weather to let us get out and practice,” St. Mary’s coach Wes Skidmore said. “Our girls were shooting very good. Some of the girls were shooting 36, 37, 38 at one time. I thought, ‘OK, they’re getting into the zone. I don’t know what happened today.'”

Cantu (Jr., Mission, Texas) shot a 42 on the front nine and followed that up with a 42 on the back nine, providing the Rattlers with their best – and most consistent – performance of the day. She enters Tuesday tied for 41st place.

Cami Furgeson (So., Newcastle, Calif.) shot a 91, while Julia Dickens (So., Fredericksburg, Texas) shot 93, Erika Patterson (Jr., San Antonio) 95 and Megan Garza (So., Victoria, Texas) 108.

“We’re young, we’re going to be working on it,” Skidmore said. “We’re definitely going to get better. Golf is such a mental game and it’s a frustrating game. It can really be tough on your mind, but I’m going to pat them on the back. We just have to get after it.”
