WICHITA, Kan. – It took nearly 77 minutes Friday night, but when the St. Mary’s women’s soccer team finally found the back of the net they did so in spectacular fashion.

Scoring her first goal of the year, Ronika Cavazos (So., Corpus Christi, Texas) put in the winning goal on an assist from Kaitie Kasperitis (Fr., Corpus Christi, Texas) at the 76:43 mark, sending the Lady Rattlers to a pivotal 1-0 victory over Newman on the road.

With goalkeeper Paola Ostos (So., El Paso, Texas) producing her fourth shutout of the year, that strike was all St. Mary’s needed to improve to 7-5-2 on the season, including a 4-3 record in Heartland Conference competition.

Moving one step closer to punching their ticket to the Heartland Conference Tournament, the Lady Rattlers outshot Newman 14-10, producing seven shots on goal.

St. Mary’s has three more games left on the regular-season schedule, starting with Sunday’s tilt at Texas-Permian Basin. The game will kick off at 2 p.m.
