DALLAS – Alejandra Cantu picked up right where she left off last season, pacing the St. Mary’s women’s golf team at this season’s opening event, the Dallas Baptist Southwest Classic.

Cantu finished in 21st place after posting matching 80s in the first and second rounds, helping lead the Rattlers to an eighth-place finish as a team Tuesday with a two-round score of 160.

Cantu, a senior from Mission, Texas, shaved more than three shots off her stroke average of 83.40 from last season.

Newcomer Bailey Furgeson, a freshman from Newcastle, Calif., tied for 32nd place (79-86-165), while her older sister, Cami Furgeson (Jr., Newcastle, Calif.) finished tied for 38th place. The elder Furgeson came back strong Tuesday with an 82 after firing an opening-round 87 for a tournament score of 169.

Daryn Petermann (So., Comfort, Texas) shot 170, while Julia Dickens (Jr., Fredericksburg, Texas) shot 171.

The Rattlers will compete next week in the NSU Women’s Classic, which will run Monday-Tuesday in Tahlequah, Okla.
