EDMOND, Okla. – Ursula Perez and Jenna Wessels are both tied for 13th individually, helping St. Mary’s University to a sixth place standing after the first day of the 2010 Heartland Conference Women’s Golf Tournament, played Monday at the Rose Creek Golf Course.

Perez (Jr., San Antonio) shot an opening round 80 to finish the day eight strokes behind Emily Kvinta of St. Edward’s University. Jenna Wessels (Jr., Katy, Texas) also shot an opening round 80 and is also eight strokes back. Kvinta has a one-stroke lead in the individual standings over Melisa Gonzalez of St. Edward’s and Joanna De Sa Peirera of the University of the Incarnate Word.

Alejandra Cantu (So., Mission, Texas) and Cami Ferguson (Fr., Newcastle, Calif.) are tied for 28th with first round 87s. Julia Dickens (Fr., Fredericksburg, Texas) is 32nd with a 90, while Erika Patterson (So., San Antonio) is 34th with a 91.

In the team competition, St. Edward’s leads with a 297, followed by the University of the Incarnate Word with a 309. Dallas Baptist University is third with a 320, Newman University is fourth with a 321, the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith is fifth with a 326, St. Mary’s is sixth with 334, Lincoln University is seventh with a 344, Oklahoma Panhandle State University is eighth with a 402 and Texas A&M International University is ninth with a 411.

The 2010 Heartland Conference Golf Tournament will wrap up with the second and final round Tuesday at the Rose Creek Golf Course.
