San Antonio – Kristin Williams scored 13 of her 14 points in the second half, leading St. Mary’s University to a 59-47 victory over the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in the semifinals of the Heartland Conference Women’s Basketball Tournament, Friday afternoon at Bill Greehey Arena.

Williams (Jr., Kansas City) made 5-of-10 shots from the field and 4-of-6 from the free throw line to post her game-high 14 points. She played in just five minutes in the first half after drawing two early fouls. In the second half she was a key part of the Rattlers run to victory. In addition to her 14 points, she pulled down 7 rebounds.

After trailing by three points at the break, UTPB took a 32-31 lead on a layup by Tammy Acosta with 15:19 left to play. But the Rattlers responded with a 7-0 run to a commanding 38-32 lead with 12:48 left to play. UTPB pulled back to within four points with 8:05 to play, but St. Mary’s finished the game with a 10-3 run to pull away late.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair, with the teams trading the lead six times and neither leading by more than five points. Liz Boyd (Fr., San Antonio) led the way with 7 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists. Chastity Noble (Sr., El Paso, Texas) and Jenni Endres (Sr., Athens, Texas) made three straight free throws to end the half, giving the Rattlers a 26-23 advantage at the break.

The Rattlers made 40.7 percent (19-47) of their shots from the field, including 50.0 percent (11-22) in the second half. St. Mary’s dominated the boards, outrebounding the Falcons 39-18. St. Mary’s committed 22 turnovers in the game.

With the victory the Rattlers are now 21-7 overall. UTPB saw its season end at 16-13. St. Mary’s will advance to the Heartland Conference Championship game on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Bill Greehey Arena. With the victory, the Rattlers will play in their third straight Heartland Conference Championship game. The game will be shown live over the internet at CollegeTVTicket.com.
