San Antonio – Shelby Cockrell tossed a four-hit shutout, leading 22nd-ranked West Texas A&M University to a 5-0 victory over St. Mary’s University, Saturday afternoon at the NCAA South Central Region Tournament at the Mustang Softball Complex. With the loss, St. Mary’s saw its 2010 season come to an end with a 34-21 record. West Texas A&M improved to 44-17.

The Buffaloes took an early lead, when Cristie Russell lined a triple down the right field line, allowing Kristina Miles to score. The throw home was wild, allowing Russell to score, giving the Buffaloes a 2-0 lead. One inning later, WTAMU added a third run on a Dani Couger RBI single. The Buffaloes wrapped up the scoring in the fourth inning with a pair of runs.

Cockrell improved to 9-0 with the win, while Crystal Keller (Fr., La Coste, Texas) fell to 5-5. In her final game as a Rattler, Arlynda Flores (Sr., Uvalde, Texas) tossed three scoreless innings of relief. Kelly Baker (Jr., Arlington, Texas) was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate for the Rattlers in the loss.

The Rattlers won their ninth Heartland Conference Tournament Championship in 2010 and advanced to the NCAA South Central Region Tournament for the ninth time in 10 years as a member of NCAA Division II. Seven Rattlers earned All-Heartland Conference recognition.
