San Antonio – Washburn University, ranked 34th in the nation, won all three completed singles matches and two of the three doubles matches to defeat St. Mary’s University, 5-1, in intercollegiate women’s tennis Wednesday morning at the St. Mary’s University Tennis Courts.

The match started off well for the Rattlers, when Mei-Jing Ang (So., McAllen, Texas) and Cimen Soy (Jr., Gothenburg, Sweden) defeated Alyssa Castillo and Trang Le Nguyen at number one doubles, 8-3. However, the Lady Blues won the other two doubles points to take the lead. Vanessa Sholles (Sr., Paramaribo, Suriname) and Kelly Cooper (So., San Antonio) each took their opponent to a tiebreaker in the first set, but both dropped the first set and lost in straight sets in the match. Those losses, combined with Soy’s defeat at the hands of Le Nguyen, clinched the match for Washburn.

With the loss, St. Mary’s fell to 7-7 this season. Washburn improved to 4-4. The Rattlers will return to the court on March 28, when they host St. Catherine University of Minnesota at 5 p.m. at the St. Mary’s University Tennis Courts.
