Odessa, Texas – The University of Texas of the Permian Basin held St. Mary’s University to just two runs in two games and swept a Heartland Conference baseball doubleheader, 3-0, 6-2, Friday afternoon.

In the first game, the Rattlers outhit the Falcons, but St. Mary’s left 11 runners on base and were never able to push a runner across. Alfonso Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) took the loss, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and 2 walks. He fell to 5-3 with the loss. Offensively, James Hipp (Sr., Uvalde, Texas) led the way, going 3-for-4, while Josh McElroy (So., San Antonio) went 2-for-3.

In the second game of the day, three errors led to three unearned runs for the Falcons, as UTPB completed the sweep. The Rattlers again had baserunners, stranding 11 in the second game as well. Matt Holland (Jr., Shreveport, La.) fell to 5-2 this season with the loss, allowing 4 runs, just 2 of which were earned, on 5 hits. McElroy and Hipp again led the offense, with each picking up 2 hits.

With the losses St. Mary’s is now 21-9 overall and 19-8 in Heartland Conference play. UTPB is 20-11, 20-10. The teams will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday with a single game starting at noon.
