Stephenville, Texas – Tarleton State University rallied late to win the first game, then took a big early lead and held on in the second game, as they swept a softball doubleheader against St. Mary’s University, 4-3, 7-4, Friday afternoon.

In the first game of the day, Christina Rodriguez (Fr., San Antonio) smashed her first homerun as a Rattler, a two run shot, to give St. Mary’s a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. But the Texans scratched across a single run to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning, then picked up the winning run on an  error in the bottom of the eighth inning for a 4-3 win. Taryn Munoz (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) suffered just her second loss in nine decisions this season, allowing 3 earned runs in 7.1 innings of work.

In the second game of the day, the Texans scored seven runs over the first three innings to take a commanding lead. But the Rattlers rallied with four runs in the sixth inning to make a game of it. Kelly Baker (Jr., Arlington, Texas) and Chelsea Wenske (Jr., Shiner, Texas) had back-to-back homeruns in the inning to key the rally. But that was as close as the Rattlers would get in the loss.

With the losses St. Mary’s is now 12-5 this season. Tarleton State improved to 8-5. The Rattlers will return to action on Saturday, when they host 17th-ranked Abilene Christian University at St. Mary’s University Softball Field, starting at 3 p.m.
