San Antonio – Lana Jo Hairston smacked a three-run homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning, and the St. Edward’s University pitching staff held St. Mary’s University to just three runs in two games, helping the Hilltoppers to a sweep of the Rattlers, 2-1, 3-2, in Heartland Conference softball action Sunday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field.

In the first game, the Hilltoppers took an early 1-0 lead on a solo homerun by Meagan Bailey in the fourth inning. The Rattlers rallied to tie the game in the top of the fifth. With two out Sarah Perez (Fr., San Marcos, Texas) singled and Shelly Lee (Fr., San Antonio) tripled down the right field line, scoring Perez. That was where things would stay until the bottom of the sixth inning. After Taryn Munoz (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) walked the first two batters of the inning, Courtney Lavendar tripled to score the go-ahead run. Munoz took the loss, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 4. She is now 17-11 this season.

In the second game it was the Rattlers who took the early lead. Alyssa Alfaro (Jr., Eagle Pass, Texas) led off the third inning by smacking her team-high seventh homerun of the season. One out later Lee singled to left and Katie Nichols (Fr., San Marcos, Texas) doubled to make it 2-0. However, the Hilltoppers took the lead back on Hairston’s homerun one inning later, making the score 3-2.

The Rattlers had one more chance to take back the lead in the sixth inning. Lauren Miller (Jr., Baytown, Texas) reached on an error to lead off. Arlynda Flores (Sr., Uvalde, Texas) followed with a single to put two runners on with no outs. Christina Rodriguez (Fr., San Antonio) walked to load the bases. But Diana Cezeaux responded by striking out the next two batters and getting a fly out by Alfaro to end the threat. Crystal Keller (Fr., La Coste, Texas) was the tough-luck loser, allowing 3 runs, all of which were unearned, on 8 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 6. She fell to 4-4 this season.

With the losses, St. Mary’s falls to 28-18 overall and 13-4 in Heartland Conference play. St. Edward’s improves to 28-17, 13-3. The two teams will wrap up their three-game series on Monday with a single game, starting at 3 p.m.
