Austin – St. Edward’s University hit four homeruns, helping the Hilltoppers to a 9-1 victory over St. Mary’s University in Heartland Conference softball action Monday afternoon at Diane Daniels Field.

Lisa Paul and Stacey Giles smacked homeruns in the first inning to give the Hilltoppers a lead they would not relinquish. The lead built up to as much as seven runs, before Christina Rodriguez (Fr., San Antonio) hit a solo homerun in the sixth inning to break up the shutout.

Paige Sandahl picked up the win for St. Edward’s, allowing 1 run on 5 hits and no walks, while striking out 6. Taryn Munoz (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) suffered the loss, falling to 17-12.

With the loss, St. Mary’s is now 28-19 overall, 13-5 in Heartland Conference play. St. Edward’s is 29-17, 14-3. The Rattlers will return to play on Friday, when they host Texas A&M International University in a doubleheader at St. Mary’s University Softball Field, starting at 4 p.m.
