San Antonio – Taryn Munoz tossed a one-hitter in game one, while it was the St. Mary’s University offense that led the way in game two, as the Rattlers swept past the University of Texas of the Permian Basin, 7-2, 7-6, in Heartland Conference softball action Saturday afternoon at St. Mary’s University Softball Field.

In the first game Munoz made just one mistake, and Angel Castro deposited it over the wall for a two-run homerun in the first inning. That would be the only hit that Munoz (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) would allow just three walks, while retiring 20 of the final 23 batters. Munoz improved to 9-2 with the win.

The Rattlers trailed until the fourth inning, when the Rattlers picked up 4 runs on 3 hits to take a 5-2 lead. Alyssa Alfaro (Jr., Eagle Pass, Texas) and Sarah Perez (Fr., San Marcos, Texas) had run scoring doubles in the inning as the Rattlers took the lead for good. Katie Nichols (Fr., San Marcos) and Arlynda Flores (Sr., Uvalde, Texas) led the Rattlers offensively with two hits each.

In the second game of the day the Rattlers again fell behind early, but rallied for the win. A grand slam homerun by Courtney Cernoch gave UTPB a 5-1 lead in the fourth inning and chased starting pitcher Crystal Keller (Fr., Castroville, Texas) from the game. Flores came in and picked up her first win of the season, allowing just 1 run on 3 hits and 3 walks, while striking out 5.

Leading the offensively in the second game was Lauren Miller (Jr., Baytown, Texas) and Kelly Baker (Jr., Arlington, Texas) with 3 hits each. Alfaro and Perez also added 2 hits each for the Rattlers, who had 13 hits as a team.

With the sweep St. Mary’s is now 15-6 overall and 2-0 in Heartland Conference play. UTPB fell to 6-14, 0-2. The teams will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday with a single game starting at noon.
