San Antonio – Jeff Rein placed second individually, while Matt Vela was sixth, helping St. Mary’s University to a sixth place finish as a team at the Buccaneer Men’s Golf Invitational, Tuesday at Normandy Shores Golf Club.

Rein (Jr., San Antonio) fired his second sub-70 round of the tournament, a 68, to place second overall. For the tournament, he shot a three-round total of 210 (69-73-68) to finish just one stroke behind Daniel Stapff of host Barry University. Vela (Jr., San Antonio) shot a final round 73 to place sixth overall. He finished the tournament with a three-round total of 214 (72-69-73). Sam Jernigan (So., San Antonio) took 41st place with a 223 (75-73-75), Guy Goodspeed (So., Del Rio, Texas) was 44th with a 224 (77-73-74), Tim Paiz (Fr., San Antonio) was 70th with a 232 (78-78-76), while James Grant (Sr., San Antonio) was 79th with a 238 (80-79-79).

In the team standings, Barry took top honors with an 854 (277-293-284) to win by 14 strokes. Lynn University was second with an 868 (287-291-290), Brevard College was third with an 872 (290-285-297), the University of Tampa and University of Central Missouri tied for fourth with identical 878s. St. Mary’s was sixth with an 879 (294-293-292).

The tournament was the final regular season event for the Rattlers. St. Mary’s will compete next in the Heartland Conference Tournament on Monday, April 19, in Edmond, Okla.
