Wichita, Kan. – Matt Holland picked up his eighth win of the season on the mound and St. Mary’s University smacked five homeruns as the Rattlers swept a doubleheader in Heartland Conference baseball action, 15-10, 9-6, Friday afternoon.
In the first game of the day the Rattlers ran out to a 13-run lead before holding off a big late rally by Newman. Alfonso Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) held the Jets to just two runs on eight hits over the first six innings. NU scored 8 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks to make a game of it late. Maldonado improved to 7-3 with the victory.
St. Mary’s picked up 14 hits, including 4 homeruns in the game, with eight players picking up at least one. Josh McElroy (So., San Antonio) led the offensive attack with 3 hits, a homerun, 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Reagan Moczygemba (Jr., Bulverde, Texas) went 2-for-4 with 4 RBI and 2 runs scored.
The second game went a similar route to the first, as the Rattlers took a 9-3 lead, then held off a bottom of the seventh rally for the win. Holland (Jr., Shreveport, La.) improved to 8-2 with the victory, allowing 5 earned runs on 11 hits. He struck out 6 and walked none. Weston Baros (Jr., San Antonio) led the offense, going 3-for-3 with a homerun and 4 runs scored.
With the sweep, St. Mary’s is now 27-11 overall and 24-10 in Heartland Conference play. Newman is now 16-22, 15-19. The teams will wrap up their four-game series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
