Wichita, Kan. – Taryn Munoz tossed a three-hit shutout for her 14th victory of the season, while Alyssa Alfaro smashed her third homerun of the series, lifting St. Mary’s University to a 6-0 victory over Newman University in Heartland Conference softball action Friday afternoon at Newman University Softball Field.

Munoz (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) allowed just 3 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 7 to improve to 14-4 this season. The shutout is Munoz’s third this season and the complete game is her 15th.

Alfaro (Jr., Eagle Pass, Texas) led the offensive attack, going 3-for-4 with a homerun, 2 RBI and a run scored. Alfaro had a homerun in all three games of the series. She now leads the team with five homeruns this season. Alfaro was one of eight Rattlers with at least one hit in the game. Katie Nichols (Fr., San Marcos, Texas) and Lauren Miller (Jr., Baytown, Texas) each had two hits in the game.

With the win St. Mary’s improved to 22-9 this season and remained undefeated in Heartland Conference play at 9-0. Newman fell to 0-11, 0-9. The Rattlers will return to action on Tuesday when they host Tarleton State University in a doubleheader at St. Mary’s University Softball Field, starting at 3 p.m.
