Austin, Texas – Ryan Morrow smacked two homeruns to lead St. Mary’s University offensively, as the Rattlers came from behind twice and split a doubleheader against St. Edward’s University, 10-11, 8-7, in Heartland Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at Lucien-Hamilton Field.
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Rattlers ran out to a commanding 10-3 lead, but couldn’t hold on in an 11-10 loss. St. Mary’s smacked four homeruns in the first game, with Morrow (Jr., Bulverde, Texas) hitting two. Jonathon Cisneros (Sr., San Antonio) and Tyler Migl (So., San Antonio) each had one long ball. But the Rattlers did not score after the fifth inning and the Hilltoppers rallied to tie the game with six runs in the bottom of the fifth and a single run in bottom of the sixth. They completed the comeback with a run in the bottom of the ninth inning.
In the second game it was the Rattlers turn to rally for the victory. After taking an early 3-0 lead, the Rattlers fell behind 6-4 after four innings. Reagan Moczygemba (Jr., Bulverde, Texas) tied the game with a two-run double in the fifth inning and Greg Herbst (Jr., San Antonio) gave the Rattlers the lead for good with an RBI single in the sixth inning. Sammy Rivas (Jr., San Antonio) picked up the win in relief, improving to 3-0 this season.
With the split, St. Mary’s is now 25-11 overall and 22-10 in Heartland Conference play. The Rattlers won six of the seven meetings against the Hilltoppers this season. St. Edward’s is now 22-17, 19-15. St. Mary’s will return to action on Tuesday, when they travel to Stephenville, Texas, to face Tarleton State University in a single game starting at 6 p.m.
