San Antonio – Taryn Munoz picked up her eighth win of the season, while Lauren Miller had six hits in the doubleheader as St. Mary’s University split a doubleheader against 17th-ranked Abilene Christian University, 8-4, 1-4, Saturday afternoon at St. Mary’s University Softball Field.
In the first game, Munoz (Sr., Bulverde, Texas) allowed just 1 earned run on 7 hits and 4 walks, while striking out 4 in the complete game victory. She improved to 8-2 with the win and has 9 complete games in 10 starts this season. She leads the Heartland Conference in victories.
Meanwhile, Miller (Jr., Baytown, Texas) was leading the offense. In the doubleheader, she went 6-of-7 with a double and a run scored. The first game was nip-and-tuck until the sixth inning. Katie Nichols (Fr., San Marcos, Texas) lined a single down the right field line, scoring two runs to give the Rattlers an 8-4 advantage.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Rattlers picked up 10 hits, but could along score one run. The lone run of the game came on an Arlynda Flores (Sr., Uvalde, Texas) solo homerun in the sixth inning. St. Mary’s stranded 9 baserunners in the game. Crystal Keller (Fr., Castroville, Texas) was the tough-luck loser, allowing 4 runs on 9 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 3 in the complete game. She fell to 1-3 this season.
With the split St. Mary’s is now 13-6 overall. ACU fell to 7-8. The Rattlers will return to action on Friday, March 5, when they host the University of Texas of the Permian Basin in a doubleheader at St. Mary’s University Softball Field at 2 p.m.
