San Antonio – Fouls, tackles and hard hits – just another chapter in the St. Mary’s-Incarnate Word rivalry.

The teams combined for 34 fouls, seven yellow cards and saw a player ejected Sunday, as the Cardinals defeated the Rattlers 3-0 at the St. Mary’s Soccer Field.

“Incarnate Word’s always a physical game,” said senior defender Robson Pritchett, a McKinney, Texas native who drew his second yellow card at the 58:13 mark. “Today we came and played hard, but we couldn’t get together. We were late to a few tackles, not really a lack of discipline, more so just being a little late, not being ready to play.”

“For us, it was a poor showing. We just showed up, not ready to play.”

The loss, a non-conference affair, dropped the Rattlers to 3-10 on the season.

St. Mary’s held tough with Incarnate Word for much of the first half, but the Cardinals finally broke through on a goal from Jon Stephenson at the 38:50 mark. Stephenson got a pass in space from Josh Ferona and chipped in a shot from the box.

Joseph Gardner made it 2-0 with a goal in the 42nd minute, while Callum Riley tacked on another goal in the 66th minute.
