DUNCAN, Okla. – Jeff Rein fired an even par 72, while Matt Vela shot a one-over par 73 to lead St. Mary’s University to a tie for ninth place after the first round of the NCAA Midwestern/South Central Region Men’s Golf Tournament, played Monday at The Territory Golf Club.

Rein (Jr., San Antonio) had a consistent round, picking up 16 pars, one birdie and one bogie to finish the round six strokes behind leader Aaron Peterson of Wayne State University. Peterson has a two-stroke lead over a trio of players, who are at 68. Vela (Jr., San Antonio) was more up and down, picking up four birdies, but also totaling five bogies to finish one stroke over par.

Sam Jernigan (So., San Antonio) is 46th with an opening round 75, James Grant (Sr., San Antonio) is tied for 71st with a 78 and Tim Paiz (Fr., San Antonio) is 105th with an 85.

In the team standings, Wayne State has a seven-stroke lead over the University of Central Missouri, 278 to 285. Ferris State University is third at 287, Abilene Christian University is fourth with a 292, while the University of Indianapolis, the University of Northern Kentucky and Dallas Baptist University are all tied for fifth with identical first round scores of 296. St. Mary’s is just two strokes behind that trio and 18 strokes behind Wayne State with a 298.

The second round of the NCAA Division II Midwest/South Central Region Tournament will be played on Tuesday, starting at 7:30 a.m. at The Territory Golf Club. The final round will be played on Wednesday.
