Duncan, Okla. – Matt Vela and Jeff Rein each shot five-over par 77s on a day in which 35-mile per hour winds made low scores a rarity, and St. Mary’s University finished in 11th place after the second day of the NCAA Midwest/South Central Region Tournament, played at The Territory Golf Club on Tuesday.

Vela (Jr., San Antonio) started fast, with birdies on his first two holes, but carded just one more birdie the rest of the way and was four-over par on the back nine holes. Vela is tied for 25th overall with a 149 (73-77) at the tournament, but is just five strokes off the lead. Nick Gunthorpe of Grand Valley State University shot a three-over par 145 to tie with Brad Nipper of Southwest Baptist University for the lead at 145.

Jeff Rein (Jr., San Antonio) is also within striking distance of the lead, just four strokes back at 149 (72-77). Rein started slow, bogeying two of the first three holes and carding a three-over par 39 on his first nine holes. But he finished strong, producing pars on seven of the last nine holes. Sam Jernigan (So., San Antonio) is tied for 37th with a 152 (75-77), James Grant (Sr., San Antonio) is 99th with a 164 (78-86) and Tim Paiz (Fr., San Antonio) is 103rd with a 168 (85-83).

In the team standings, Wayne State University remained in the top spot, despite shooting a 28-over par 316, the third worst round of the day. They have a six-stroke lead over the University of Central Missouri and Cameron University, who are tied for second with identical 600s. St. Mary’s is tied for 11th with a 612, 18 strokes behind WSU and just six strokes out of fifth place, the final team that will advance to the NCAA Championships next week.

The final round of the NCAA Midwest/South Central Region Tournament will tee off at 8 a.m. Wednesday morning, with the Rattlers beginning play at 8:20 a.m. The top five teams and the top three individuals, not on a team advancing, will move on to the NCAA Championships.
