San Antonio – St. Mary’s University baseball player Alfonso Maldonado was named NCAA Division II All-South Central Region by Daktronics Inc. for his play during the 2010 season, it was announced on Sunday.

Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) was the Rattlers top starting pitcher, going 8-6 with a 2.91 ERA, 10 complete games and 2 shutouts in 102.0 innings of work. Opposing batters hit just .244 against him this season. He had 10 complete games in 16 starts this season. In his six losses, the Rattlers scored just five runs, including three shutouts.

Maldonado previously was named first team All-Heartland Conference and was named Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week once this season. The award also marked the fifth straight season that the Rattlers have had at least one player earn NCAA Division II All-South Central Region recognition.

The Rattlers will return to action at the NCAA South Central Region Tournament on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m., when they face seventh-ranked Abilene Christian University in an elimination game.

St. Mary’s student-athletes graduation rate is 63 percent, higher than the NCAA Division II average of 55 percent.
