Emporia, Kan. – Abby Hughes RBI double in the bottom of the fifth inning scored the go-ahead run, lifting Emporia State University to a 2-1 victory over St. Mary’s University in softball action Wednesday afternoon at Turnbull Field.

Angela Mahan gave the Hornets a 1-0 lead, when she led off the game with a solo homerun off Taryn Munoz (Sr., Bulverde, Texas). From there, Munoz settled down and allowed just seven more hits the rest of the way. The Rattlers tied the game in the top of the third inning. Arlynda Flores (Sr., Uvalde, Texas) smacked an RBI single to score Lia Provence (Jr., Bastrop, Texas), tying the score at 1-1.

Munoz fell to 12-4 with the loss. She allowed just 2 runs on 8 hits, walked none and struck out 2. Jennifer Heerey picked up the win in relief, allowing just 1 hit in four innings of work to improve to 7-1.

St. Mary’s fell to 19-9 with the loss, while ESU improved to 15-8. Wednesday’s game was originally scheduled for Thursday, but was changed due to the Rattlers weekend series against Newman University being moved from Friday-Saturday to Thursday-Friday. The series will start with a doubleheader Thursday at 4 p.m., and then will be followed by a single game on Friday at 11 a.m.
