San Antonio – Only a week into her collegiate career, St. Mary’s University freshman midfielder Jamey Coronado already is the recipient of a prestigious award.

Coronado, a San Antonio native who graduated from John Marshall High School, has been named the Heartland Conference Women’s Soccer Co-Offensive Player of the Week for the hat trick she recorded last week, the conference announced Tuesday.

Coming off the bench last Sunday, Coronado recorded the first hat trick ever posted by a St. Mary’s freshman in a 3-1 victory over Southwestern Oklahoma State University at home. In just the second game of her career, she also recorded only the eighth hat trick in the program’s history and the first since Sept. 21, 2004.

“I don’t know how it happened, but it did,” she said immediately after the game.

Coronado’s three goals fell one short of the school record of four, set by Kelly Felts in 2004. She recorded five shots in the game, all of which were on goal.

The award covers the week of Aug. 30-Sept. 5.
