Goodwell, Okla. – Alfonso Maldonado tossed a two-hitter in the first game and St. Mary’s University rallied late in the second game to sweep a doubleheader, 13-1, 6-3, in Heartland Conference baseball action Thursday afternoon.

Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) allowed just 1 run on 2 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 3 in the complete game victory. He is now 5-2 this season and lowered his ERA to just 1.04. The complete game was his sixth in eight starts.

The Rattler offense backed Maldonado up with 13 hits. Eight of the Rattlers nine starters had at least one hit, with five picking up two or more. Jonathan Cisneros (Sr., San Antonio) smacked his fourth homerun of the season and scored 4 runs.

In the second game the Rattlers fell behind 3-0 early until they rallied late. Entering the top of the sixth inning, the Rattlers had totaled just two hits against Swenton Martina. Cisneros again had the big hit, smacking the go-ahead two-run single as the Rattlers took a 5-3 lead. Sammy Rivas (Jr., San Antonio) picked up the win in relief, tossing 2.2 perfect innings. He is now 2-0 with a 0.59 ERA.

With the sweep St. Mary’s is now 20-7 overall and 18-7 in Heartland Conference play. The Rattlers have won six straight games and 17 of their last 20. OPSU fell to 6-22, 6-21. The teams will wrap up their four-game series on Friday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
