San Antonio – Carl O’Neal and Courtney Behrend each tossed complete game victories on the mound, while Reagan Moczygemba had three hits at the plate, leading St. Mary’s University to a sweep of the University of the Incarnate Word, 3-2, 8-2, in Heartland Conference baseball action Friday afternoon at V.J. Keefe Field.

O’Neal (Fr., San Antonio) allowed just 2 unearned runs on 4 hits and 4 walks, while striking out four in the complete game effort in game two. He improved to 3-1 with the victory. Behrend (Sr., Comfort, Texas) was equally effective in one. He allowed just 2 runs, 1 earned, on 5 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 8. He retired 14 of the last 15 batters to improve to 6-2 this season.

The first game of the day saw an offensive explosion in the first inning, before the pitcher’s took over the rest of the way. The Cardinals picked up two runs on a Reno Malay double in the top of the first. The Rattlers responded in the bottom of the inning. With one out, James Hipp (Sr., Uvalde, Texas) singled and Ryan Morrow (Jr., Bulverde, Texas) followed with a walk. One out later, Weston Baros (Jr., San Antonio) singled to score Hipp. Then Moczygemba (Jr., Bulverde, Texas) smacked a double to right-center, scoring both Morrow and Baros to give the Rattlers a 3-2 lead. That is where things would end up, as St. Mary’s picked up just one more hit the rest of the, while the Cardinals had just two.

In the second game, the Rattlers scored in each of the first four innings to take a commanding lead, and never let up. UIW used five pitchers in the game, but none slowed down the Rattler bats. Moczygemba went a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI and 2 runs scored. Tyler Migl (So., San Antonio) smacked his fifth homerun of the season.

The Rattlers won the series 3-1, and also took the season series, 5-2. With the sweep, St. Mary’s is now 31-14 overall, 29-13 in Heartland Conference play. UIW fell to 32-12, 30-10. The Rattlers are now just two games behind the Cardinals for first place in the Heartland Conference. St. Mary’s will return to action on Tuesday, when they host Tarleton State University in a single non-conference game, starting at 3 p.m. at V.J. Keefe Field.
