Laredo – Matt Holland picked up his 10th win over the season and the St. Mary’s University offense scored six runs early, helping the Rattlers to a split of a Heartland Conference baseball doubleheader against Texas A&M International University, 0-3, 6-4, Friday afternoon.

The Rattlers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI ground out by Ryan Morrow (Jr., Bulverde, Texas). St. Mary’s increased the lead in the second inning on a two-run double by Tyler Migl (So., San Antonio) and an RBI single by Josh McElroy (So., San Antonio). The lead increased to 6-0 on an RBI single by Jason Garcia (Jr., Falfurrias, Texas) and a sacrifice fly by Weston Baros (Jr., San Antonio).

Holland (Jr., Shreveport, La.) improved to 10-2 this season, allowing four runs on 10 hits and two walks, while striking out three in five innings of work. Sammy Rivas (Jr., San Antonio) picked up his fourth save of the season with two innings of scoreless relief.

In the first game of the day, Dustdevil starting pitcher allowed just four hits in a complete game shutout. St. Mary’s stranded seven baserunners and committed two errors, helping TAMIU score two unearned runs. Alfonso Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) fell to 8-4 with the loss, allowing three runs, one earned on five hits and two walks, while striking out eight.

With the split, St. Mary’s is now 37-15 overall and 33-13 in Heartland Conference play. TAMIU fell to 15-35, 14-33. The teams will wrap up their four-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at noon. The Rattlers continue to lead the Heartland Conference standings with a 33-13 record. The University of the Incarnate Word is second at 32-13. If the Rattlers sweep the doubleheader Saturday, they will win the regular season Heartland Conference title and will be the top seed in the Heartland Conference Tournament, next Saturday in Austin, Texas.
