San Antonio – Matt Holland picked up his third win of the season to lead the way as St. Mary’s University split a Heartland Conference baseball doubleheader, 0-1, 8-3, Saturday afternoon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.

Holland (Jr., Shreveport, La.) went 6 innings, allowing 3 runs on 8 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 3. He improved to 3-1 with the win. Sammy Rivas (Jr., San Antonio) tossed 3 scoreless innings to pick up his first save as a Rattler. The Rattlers totaled 13 hits in the game, led by Josh McElroy (So., San Antonio), who went 3-of-5 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored.

In the first game of the day, the Mike Williams limited the Rattlers to just 4 hits and 2 walks over 5 1/3 innings of work and Zach Biery tossed 1 2/3 inning of perfect relief to pick up the win as Newman won the first game of the doubleheader 1-0. Alfonso Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) matched the Newman pitchers for six innings, before the Jets finally broke through in the seventh. Brandon Cox led off the inning by reaching on an error and two batters later Trent Bierman singled home Cox for the only run of the game. Maldonado took the loss, despite allowing just the unearned run on 4 hits and 1 walk, while striking out 10 batters. He fell to 2-1 in four starts this season, despite allowing just 1 earned run in 26 innings of work this season.

With the split St. Mary’s is now 7-5 overall this season and 7-5 in Heartland Conference play. The Rattlers will return to action on Sunday, when they host Newman in the final game of the series, starting at noon.
