San Antonio – Reagan Moczygemba brought home the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning, lifting St. Mary’s University to a split of a Heartland Conference doubleheader against the University of the Incarnate Word, 0-1, 5-4, Friday afternoon at Sullivan Field. The win broke a 14-game Heartland Conference win streak for the 14th-ranked Cardinals.

The first game of the day was a good old fashioned pitcher’s duel, with the teams combining for just five hits over seven innings. The difference in the game was a one-out solo homerun by John Zule in the fourth inning. That was one of just two hits that Alfonso Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) gave up in the game. He fell to 2-2 this season, allowing just his second earned run in five starts this season. Kirk Jewasko improved to 5-0, allowing the Rattlers just three base hits.

The teams battled back-and-forth in the second game of the day, but Moczygemba (Jr., Bulverde, Texas) lifted the Rattlers to the exciting win in the late innings. Jonathan Cisneros (Sr., San Antonio) led off the eighth inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Weston Baros (Jr., San Antonio). He then moved to third on a passed ball. That allowed Moczygemba to bring Cisneros home on a deep fly, giving the Rattlers a 5-4 lead.

Sammy Rivas (Jr., San Antonio) picked up his first win as a Rattler, going 3.0 innings, allowing just 1 run on 2 hits. Michael Villarreal (Sr., Eagle Pass, Texas) tossed a scoreless ninth inning to pick up his first save of the season.

With the split St. Mary’s is now 9-6 overall and 9-6 in Heartland Conference play. UIW is 14-3, 14-1. The teams will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday with a single game, starting at 1 p.m.
