Jefferson City, Mo. – St. Mary’s University pounded out 38 runs on 34 hits to sweep a doubleheader against Lincoln University, 16-4, 22-2, in Heartland Conference baseball action Saturday afternoon.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first inning of the first game of the doubleheader, the Rattlers scored nine unanswered runs to take a lead they would not relinquish. Greg Herbst (Jr., San Antonio) led St. Mary’s offensively, going 4-for-4 with 2 doubles, a homerun, 4 RBI and 3 runs scored. Weston Baros (Jr., San Antonio) had 3 hits, including a homerun. Alfonso Maldonado (Sr., Laredo, Texas) picked up his third win of the season and had 8 strikeouts.

The second game was never in doubt as the Rattlers scored 9 runs in the first inning and cruised to the easy win. Eight of the Rattlers nine starters had at least one hit, with five picking up two or more. Matt Holland (Jr. Shreveport, La.) picked up his fourth win of the season, allowing just 2 runs on 4 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 8. Ryan Morrow (Jr., Bulverde, Texas) picked up a homerun in the second game, giving him homeruns in each game of the doubleheader.

With the sweep St. Mary’s improved to 13-6 overall and 12-6 in Heartland Conference play. The Rattlers have now won five straight games. Lincoln fell to 3-14, 3-14. The teams will wrap up their three-game series on Saturday with a single game, starting at noon.
