San Antonio – St. Mary’s University bounced back from a loss in the first game, pounding out 22 runs on 17 hits in a 22-4 victory over Oklahoma Panhandle State University, in Heartland Conference baseball action Monday afternoon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium. OPSU edged the Rattlers 5-4 in the first game of the day.

After struggling offensively in the first game of the day, the Rattlers left no doubt in the second half, batting around in back-to-back innings as they routed the Aggies early. Ten different Rattlers had at least one hit in the game, including five players with two or more. Tyler Migl (So., San Antonio) went 3-for-4 with 2 doubles, 4 RBI and 2 runs scored. Weston Baros (Jr., San Antonio) smashed his first homerun of the season.

Matt Holland (Jr., Shreveport, La.) came on in relief in the third inning and was nearly flawless. He allowed just 1 hit and 1 walk, while striking out 5 in 4 2/3 innings of work to pick up his first win as a Rattler.

In the first game of the day, Robby Yaussy held St. Mary’s in check for six innings, and then nearly let the lead slip away in frantic Rattler rally. Yaussy had allowed just three hits and three walks over the first six innings, but tired late. His defense didn’t help him either, committing errors to allow the first two batters of the seventh reach. Then Ryan Morrow (Jr., Bulverde, Texas) lined a double down the leftfield line, allowing Esteban Raygoza (So., San Antonio) and Baros to score. Josh McElroy (So., Helotes, Texas) followed with a triple to make it a 5-3 game. That was the end of the night for Yaussy, but not the end of the Rattler rally. New pitcher Swenton Martina issued a balk, scoring McElroy. But that would be the end of the rally as Martina retired Jonathon Cisneros (Sr., San Antonio) for the final out.

With the split, St. Mary’s is now 1-1 this season. OPSU is also 1-1. The two teams will play the final game of the series on Tuesday afternoon, starting at noon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.
