San Antonio – St. Mary’s University set season highs in hits and runs scored as the Rattlers handed 14th-ranked the University of the Incarnate Word its first series loss of the season with an easy 23-7 rout of the Cardinals Saturday afternoon at Sullivan Field.

Every Rattler starter had at least 1 hit, including four players with 3 or more base knocks. St. Mary’s put the game away early, putting 11 runs on the board in the second inning to take a 14-0 lead. The game was called after seven innings due to the mercy rule. The 23 runs and the 16-run margin of victory are both the second highest in the series, behind only the 2001 Rattlers 28-5 win over the Cardinals.

Courtney Behrend (Sr., Comfort, Texas) was the beneficiary of the offensive outburst, improving to 2-0 this season. He allowed 5 earned runs on 8 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 4. James Hipp (Sr., Uvalde, Texas) led the way offensively, going 4-of-6 with 5 runs scored. Josh McElroy (So., San Antonio) went 3-of-5 with a homerun, 5 RBI and 3 runs scored.

With the win the Rattlers are now 10-6 overall and 10-6 in Heartland Conference play. UIW fell to 14-4, 14-2. St. Mary’s will return to action on Wednesday, March 3, when they travel to Fort Smith, Ark., to face the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith in a single game, starting at 3 p.m.
