San Antonio – Courtney Behrend and Michael Villarreal combined on a five-hitter and Ryan Morrow hit the go-ahead single in the eighth inning, lifting St. Mary’s University to a 3-1 victory over St. Edward’s University in Heartland Conference baseball action Sunday afternoon at V.J. Keefe Memorial Stadium.

Behrend (Sr., Comfort, Texas) was dominant in his six innings of work, allowing just 4 hits and no walks, while striking out 7. He left in the top of the seventh after the first two batters reached base. Villarreal retired the Hilltoppers, but not before the first run of the game scored on an error, giving SEU a 1-0 lead.

For 6 2/3 innings, Jeff Rohrbach matched Behrend, allowing just 6 hits and 1 walk in 6 2/3 innings on the mound. Jonathon Burns relieved Rohrbach in the seventh and the Rattlers broke through against Burns in the eighth inning. With one out, Jason Garcia (Jr., Falfurrias, Texas) singled and Jonathan Cisneros (Sr., San Antonio) followed with a base hit to put runners on first and second. That brought up Weston Baros (Jr., San Antonio), who laced a single through the left side of the infield, scoring pinch runner Grant Harrelson (Jr., San Antonio) with the tying run. Morrow (Jr., Bulverde) smacked the fourth straight hit, scoring both Cisneros and Baros to give the Rattlers a 3-1 lead.

From there, Villarreal finished off three scoreless innings of work for the victory. He allowed just 1 hit and 2 walks, while striking out 3 to improve to 1-2 this season. Burns fell to 2-1 with the loss.

With the win, the Rattlers swept the three-game series against the Hilltoppers. St. Mary’s allowed just two runs in three games, while scoring 18. The Rattlers are now 6-4 overall and 6-4 in Heartland Conference play. SEU is now 5-5, 5-5. The Rattlers will return to action on Friday, Feb. 19, when they travel to Wichita, Kan., to face Newman University in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
