San Antonio – Carolina Hernandez led a second St. Mary’s University charge, but the Rattlers were unable to overcome a two-goal halftime deficit and fell to Northwest Missouri State University, 2-1, in women’s soccer action Saturday afternoon at St. Mary’s University Soccer Field.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first half, the Rattlers came out with a renewed sense of urgency and intensity in the second period. The result was a goal less than two minutes into the half. Leia Kirch (Fr., Carrollton) took a shot from the right side that hit the crossbar and deflected to Carolina Hernandez (Jr., El Paso), who headed it into the left corner of the net, cutting the deficit to 2-1. The goal was the first allowed by the Bearkats this season after three straight shutouts.

The Bearkats controlled play throughout the first half and took a 2-0 lead. Sara Meidlinger gave the Bearkats the lead in the ninth minute when she sent a long looping shot from the left side just over the hands of Mari Edwards (Fr., Apex, N.C.). Then right before halftime, Kelsey Sanders hit a nearly identical shot from 25 yards out into the right corner of the net to give NWSU a 2-0 lead.

With the loss, St. Mary’s fell to 0-3-1 this season, while NWSU improved to 4-0. St. Mary’s will return to action on Monday when they travel to Joplin, Mo., to face Missouri Southern State University at Noon.
