San Antonio – Kirsten Chapman had 12 kills, helping St. Mary’s University to a two sets to one lead, but the University of the Incarnate Word rallied for a 21-25, 25-17, 22-25, 25-18, 15-6, win in Heartland Conference volleyball action Wednesday night at the McDermott Center.

The Rattlers made just 18 attack errors, compared with 35 kills over the first three sets and took a commanding two sets to one lead. But the Cardinals rallied to win game four 25-18, then wrapped up the match with a 15-6 win in the fifth set. The Rattlers dropped a five-set match for the third straight time, including two in a row that the Rattlers led after three sets.

Chapman (So., Jourdanton) had 12 kills and four blocks to lead the Rattlers in both categories. Katelyn Kershner (Jr., San Antonio) had seven kills, four service aces and 10 digs. As a team the Rattlers finished the match with 49 kills against 34 attack errors. Incarnate Word had 56 kills against just 15 errors.

With the loss, St. Mary’s fell to 3-13 overall and 2-3 in Heartland Conference play, while UIW improved to 14-4, 4-1. St. Mary’s will return to action on Friday when they host the St. Mary’s/Incarnate Word Regional Crossover Tournament. The Rattlers will face Midwestern State at 2 p.m. on Friday afternoon at Bill Greehey Arena.
