WARRENSBURG, Mo. – Corrine Stringer had 13 kills and 17th-ranked Pittsburg State University had 40 kills against just 10 errors as the Gorillas defeated St. Mary’s University, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21, on the final day of the Peggy Martin Classic, hosted by the University of Central Missouri, Saturday morning at the UCM Multipurpose Facility.
The first set was a back-and-forth affair, with 11 ties and two lead changes. After trailing by three twice, the Rattlers rallied on a pair of kills by Kirsten Chapman (Jr., San Antonio) and another by Stephanie Crowell (Sr., The Woodlands) to tie the match at 19-19. But PSU finished the first set with six straight points to win 25-19. In the second set they took an early six-point lead, then held off a late rally by St. Mary’s for a 25-19 win. In the final set, the Rattlers again pushed the Gorillas, taking the lead at 10-9 and pulling within two points three times late in the set. But PSU held off St. Mary’s for the 25-21 win, wrapping up the match.
The Rattlers were led by a balanced attack, with five players picking up six or more kills. Chapman led the way with nine kills, while Adrianna Keys (So., San Antonio), Luisa Rodriguez (Jr., Belo Horizonte, Brazil) and Kori McCarver (Jr., San Antonio) each had seven kills. Defensively, Stephanie Flores (So., San Antonio) had 13 digs.
With the loss, St. Mary’s dropped to 1-10 overall this season and has lost 10 matches in a row. Pittsburg State improved to 8-3. The Rattlers will return to action on Friday, Sept. 18, when they host Newman University at 7 p.m. in the Heartland Conference opener for St. Mary’s.
