San Antonio – The St. Mary’s University men’s tennis team won five of the six singles matches and rolled to a 6-3 win over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in non-conference tennis action Saturday morning at the St. Mary’s Tennis Courts. MHB defeated the St. Mary’s women, 5-2 on Saturday.
Vitas Van Dijk (So., Paramaribo, Suriname), Marcin Marczewski (Fr., Gwiazozista, Poland), Marcos Villarreal (So., Corpus Christi), Drew Zemanek (So., LaPorte) and Matthew Carrion (Fr., San Antonio) all posted straight sets wins to lead the way for the Rattler men. Van Dijk and Villarreal also teamed up to pick up the Rattlers lone doubles point of the match, 8-4 overal Josh Pownall and Daniel White at number one doubles.
For the women, Vanessa Sholles (Sr., Paramaribo, Suriname) picked up the lone singles victory, 6-2, 6-4 over Mallory Aarhus at number two singles. Sholles also teamed with Kelly Cooper (Fr., San Antonio) to win 8-6 over Rebecca Everett and Chris Voss at number two doubles.
With the win the Rattlers are now 4-2 this season, while UMHB is 0-4. St. Mary’s will return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Laredo to face Laredo Community College in a men’s/women’s doubleheader at 1 p.m.
