San Antonio – Freshman Anthony Bustos scored his first goal of the season, as St. Mary’s University picked up its first victory of the 2009 season, 2-0, over Mesa State University in men’s soccer action Sunday. The Rattler women’s team fell to Abilene Christian by a 1-0 count.

Bustos (Fr., Helotes) scored the second goal of the game in the 88th minute to seal the 2-0 victory on the road. The Rattlers first goal came in the 58th minute on an own goal. Brett Collier (Sr., Schertz) was strong in goal, picking up his first shutout of 2009, making five saves in the process. St. Mary’s was outshot by Mesa State, 12-7. With the win, the Rattlers evened their record at 1-1 this season.

For the women, a strong performance in goal by freshman Mari Edwards (Fr., Apex, N.C.) went to waste as the Wildcats scored in the ninth minute for a 1-0 win. For the second straight contest, the Rattler offense failed to score. St. Mary’s is now 0-2, with both losses coming by a 1-0 score.

Both Rattler soccer teams will return to action on Thursday when they host Our Lady of the Lake in a women’s/men’s doubleheader, starting at 2 p.m. at St. Mary’s Soccer Field. The games will mark the first time the two schools have met in soccer.
